Art by Hazel Florez
Hazel Florez b. 1984 is a multi-media artist, researcher and writer living and working in London. She has participated in a range of group and solo shows both within the UK and internationally. Before becoming an artist, she taught Politics at Queen Mary University. She has a BA Politics (SOAS), MA Fine Art (Edinburgh), MA Philosophy (OU), and studied for her PhD at Queen Mary University London.
Her work as an artist delves into the symbolic realms of alchemy, Jungian depth psychology, mythology, folklore and mysticism. Florez works with oil painting, watercolours, and mixed media photography, combining found objects, painted paper costumes and painted photographs. Florez makes slowly and intricately constructed pieces that preserve the idea of art as a meditative and devotional practice. Influenced by surrealism, magick, worldbuilding, and ecofeminism, Florez produces artworks which create a cosmos of re-enchantment and esoteric mystery.
She has participated and given talks at a range of venues and events including the Jung Club, the Last Tuesday Society, the Magical Womens Conference and ‘Concerning the Spiritual in Art’ podcast. She has her work published with Taschen at The Library of Esoterica and is due to be featured in a forthcoming Taschen volume on “Mystical Beasts” due to be published in 2026. Florez writes for The World of Interiors magazine. She was shortlisted for The College of Psychic Studies annual art competition 2022 and 2024. She is due to give a lecture on the history of “Tarot and Surrealism” in October 2025 at the College of Psychic Studies.
