Oastar by O SAALA SAKRAAL
Oastar marks the long-awaited third record from O Saala Sakraal, the ceremonial vessel guided by nOh v°v (of Trepaneringsritualen and Norn) and Sunnifa St. Álander (of Hadewych). Recorded in the aftermath of the discovery and subsequent destruction of an ancient solar temple by local authorities in the eastern region of Hamaland, a land still shadowed by the enduring influence of the Church, this new work channels both lament and invocation.
Oastar has a deeply cyclical feel to it. There is deep movement with each track and the record as a whole – an invocation, a shedding and a regrowth that endeavours and achieves to come full circle, back to its original form. It is much more than just an album, it is a sensation that buries itself deep within you and embeds itself into your psyche.
The soundscape and landscape meet each other - it is an aural translation of sorts, a conversation between the past and the present. It is a vast sound that travels beyond this realm, via sonic rituals and arcane whispers. These whispers begin in an unsettled manner and as each track unfurls, we begin to feel the process that follows – the fracturing, the fragmenting, the cleansing and healing of the land. An elegy written in the dirt – burying what came before and returning to the earth.
Oastar is a powerful and beautiful ritual, a collaboration, a union that was meant to the heal the wounds of the past. It is a record to listen to in the dark, to savour yet devour in equal measures.
